CTC Math Review

My daughter and I immediately knew CTC Math is the homeschool math program for her after watching the company’s demo. Never did I think I would hear my daughter say, “I like it! Let’s get it.” That prompted me to quickly put in my request to do this review through the Old Schoolhouse Review Crew. My daughter and I were so excited when we later discovered we were among those chosen to receive a 12 Month Family Plan subscription for CTC Math!

Pat Murray originally created CTC Math for Australian students. The online math tutorials are now available to K-12 students worldwide. Mr. Murray is an experienced classroom teacher and has written all of the 1,400 plus CTC Math tutorials. He also does the voice-overs for the video streamed lessons.

There are options for using CTC Math. Public school students may use it as a tutorial to help them improve their understanding thus increasing their math scores. Homeschoolers may use CTC Math as a supplement to another program or as their core math curriculum (K-6 is currently available.)

CTC Math Account Setup

Activating an account is quite easy. The Welcome to CTC Math email contains a password and link to the parent login page. All it took to create my daughter’s account was to enter in her name and create a login username and password for her. She was then able to access her own account through the student login page.

CTC Math

We found math courses ranging from Kindergarten all the way up to Calculus and Trigonometry. A nice feature is each student has access to the all of the math courses not just one. We chose Algebra 1 since it is the course she is taking this year. Algebra 1 has four parts called streams. Each stream contains anywhere between three to six topics. Each topic contains between 5 and 16 lessons. The total number of lessons for Algebra 1 is 150.

The first day we used this program my daughter was not in the mood for math. Her attitude quickly changed once she completed the first lesson. Her comment was, “This makes sense.” She even asked if she could do math every day (she is doing block schooling this year where she completes all of her lessons for the week for one subject per day.)

CTC Math Lesson

The video lessons are less than 10 minutes in length. There are approximately 4 examples for completing each of the math lessons. After watching the video, my daughter would complete a corresponding worksheet.

We found it easier to print all the worksheets in advance and place them into a binder. This will help to keep all of her papers in one place. A binder will be especially helpful if she needs to use any additional sheets of paper to complete her calculations.

Algebra 1 requires the use of a calculator. My daughter finds it very helpful when Pat explains how to use certain functions on a more advanced calculator.

CTC Math Worksheet, Entering Results, and Lesson Summary

My daughter is able to complete her lessons independently. There are times she needs to review a lesson. She simply watches the video over again or refers to the lesson summary until she feels confident in answering the questions. Once completed, she enters in her results. She receives immediate feedback letting her know how many answers she has correct. If she misses any, her answers are highlighted letting her know which problems she needs to redo. After she has completed the lesson, she is able to view the solutions to see the detailed process of completing each calculation.

CTC Math Certificate

CTC Math does all the scoring and recording keeping. My daughter is able to see how well she is doing in her lessons with each topic. She has even received a certificate for achieving the gold level with a 97% efficiency rating.

CTC Math Weekly Report

There are a couple of ways for me to keep track of how well my daughter is doing in her math lessons. The first is logging into the parent page. There I can find out how many lessons she has completed, when she has completed them, and her scores. The other way for me to keep track is by having a weekly report emailed to me.

My daughter wanted to know, “Why didn’t you get this long time ago?” If I had only known we would have used CTC Math all along.

I have looked ahead at the upcoming high school courses and am disheartened. There are not enough lessons for us to use CTC Math as the core curriculum. I contacted customer support to see if any changes are on the horizon. Matt said K-6 may now be used as core curriculum. The upper grades will continue as tutorials until they are expanded upon, which is to occur in the next 8-10 months. This will not help my daughter for this upcoming school year. But, she will definitely be looking forward to using CTC Math in the future.

There are a couple of things I hope CTC Math will add along with making the high school core curriculum. A scope and sequence along with course descriptions will be helpful for when it comes time for my daughter to apply for college admission.

As you already know, homeschool curriculum can become expensive. CTC Math offers single student and family plans. The family plan allows each child to have his or her own account and access to all of the math courses. The best part is you only pay one price for all of your children.
